A birthmark is essentially any mark, bump or spot that appears on an infant’s skin around the time of birth. These marks can be categorized based on their composition.
A birthmark is essentially any mark, bump or spot that appears on an infant’s skin around the time of birth. These marks can be categorized based on their composition.
Birthmarks that result from the excessive buildup of melanin pigment are referred to as pigmented birthmarks. Most of these birthmarks range from blue/grey to brown to dark black. Some birthmarks are white, called nevus depigmentosis, that can occur due to a lack of melanin in that area of skin. There are some birthmarks that are comprised of blood vessels referred to as vascular birthmarks. These are typically red, purple or blue.
The majority of birthmarks most likely result from defective cell migration during fetal development and are benign. They typically do not require treatment but should be monitored periodically for any change or development of symptoms.
Laser Treatments: Laser treatment can be used to treat birthmarks cosmetically. They may be effective for melanin pigment or blood vessels.
Surgical Excision: This type of treatment can be used to remove a birthmark, but will leave a scar.
“Treating birthmarks like port wine stains, cafe au lait patches and nevi of ota with lasers is extremely rewarding for both patients and myself. Birthmarks, especially on the face, can cause significant emotional and self esteem issues for patients. With a few quick treatments with the appropriate laser, I am able to remove the birthmark and help patients regain their self confidence.”
