Universal Dermatology & Vein Care offers IPL (intense pulse light) treatment to correct brown spots, freckles, and redness caused by sun damage on the skin. During the procedure, bright pulses of light are emitted and absorbed by the brown spots on the areas being treated. Once this light is absorbed, the spots will begin to darken and eventually peel off over the next week, leaving the skin’s complexion more even and clear.
The difference between standard laser treatment and the IPL procedure is the targeting ability of the wavelengths. Lasers usually produce one single wavelength of light that is attracted to a certain target color. The intense pulse light produces numerous wavelengths so it can target both brown and red colors effectively, thus eliminating the brown spots and red broken blood vessels caused by sun damage.
IPL can be used to treat brown spots and sun damage anywhere on the body. Common treatment areas include the chest, face, shoulders, and back. Patients may experience redness on the treatment area for 3-5 days, and it may take 7-10 days for the spots to peel off. We recommend spacing treatments out by at least one month to allow enough time for the skin to heal.
You may see noticeable results after just one treatment, however, patients typically require 3-4 sessions to completely even out the skin tone. The number of treatments needed also depends on the degree of sun damage, to begin with. After treatment, proper sun protection is required to ensure the brown spots and sun damage do not reappear.
